Use Pumpkins to Teach Your Child About the Globe

Pumpkins are everywhere this time of year, and they are a great tool to teach your child about the globe and geography.

Bring home a round pumpkin. Explain to your child that the point where the stem meets the pumpkin is the North Pole. The blossom end on the bottom is the South Pole. The pumpkin's natural grooves are like lines of longitude.

Have your child measure and draw the equator around the pumpkin, halfway between the north and south poles. Refer to maps in an atlas or online together, and have your child draw pictures of the continents. Then your child can attach the continents to the pumpkin globe in the correct hemisphere. As a final touch, use a pin with a colored head to mark where home is.
