Help Your Child Focus When Doing Schoolwork
To get the most out of schoolwork, children must be able to give it their full attention. They must focus on the work and not get distracted. When your child does schoolwork at home, help by reducing distractions. Turn nearby TVs and other devices off.
Here are some other ways to help your child concentrate:
- Set a regular study time. Doing the same thing at the same time everyday helps children turn their attention to the task more easily.
- Help your child get organized. Keep school supplies in one place. Make a file for each subject.
- Help your child make a to-do list each day. Include school and non-school tasks. Have your child check off each task after completing it.
- Set a timer. If your child has trouble focusing, set a timer for a short time—say five minutes. Have your child work until it goes off. Then call a one-minute break. When it's over, set the timer again. Over time, gradually increase the time until your child can concentrate for 30 minutes.
- Give nonverbal cues. Simply raise your hand or point to the assignment when you see your child has lost focus.
- Use breathing exercises to help your child relax and focus. Together, breathe in and out slowly five to 10 times.
