Help Your Child Prepare for Tests

It's likely that your child will take several tests during the school year. Here are five ways families can help students prepare:

  1. Make a study schedule. Brain researchers know that several short study sessions are more effective than one long one.
  2. Review together. Ask questions and see if your child can answer them. If the teacher has sent home any review sheets, use those to check your child's understanding. If your child has a textbook, look to see whether there are questions at the end of each chapter.
  3. Make up a practice test. Use your child's past worksheets and assignments to make up questions. Older students can make up their own test. As they think about which questions the teacher is likely to ask, they'll be doing valuable reviewing.
  4. Let your child be the teacher. You be the student and let your child teach you the material the test will cover.
  5. Review test-taking tips. Children should be reminded to read instructions carefully and to follow them exactly. Also remind your child to pay attention to time—and to answer the easy questions quickly and then come back to spend time on more difficult ones.

In addition, make sure your child gets a good night's sleep in the days before a test and eats a nutritious breakfast on test day. Even the most prepared students won't do well if they are tired or hungry.
