Help Your Child Master Math Skills
Not every child is a math whiz. But daily math practice can help all kids improve their math skills.
To foster success with math:
- Practice math vocabulary. Have your child define terms and explain them to you to demonstrate understanding.
- Encourage neat writing. Many math errors are due to sloppy number writing. Young children can trace over numbers to practice writing them. Older children can use graph paper to keep numbers aligned neatly.
- Practice basic math facts. Use flash cards and play math games together until your child has these memorized.
- Teach your child to read word problems several times. Suggest drawing a picture or diagram to help understand what's being asked.
- Have your child solve sample problems in the textbook or on worksheets.
- Ask the teacher what you can do to help your child master the concepts being taught. Math builds on itself, so it's important for your child to get a firm foundation now.
- Make learning math fun. Play games like Yahtzee, dominoes and Monopoly that require math.
