Monitor Your Child's Schoolwork

Children get more out of schoolwork when parents monitor and discuss their efforts.

To monitor effectively, do a "Five Minute Achievement Check." Each day, give at least five minutes of your full attention to any schoolwork your child brings home. Make it a point to:

1. Review your child's finished work. Is it complete? Is it neat? If it isn't, encourage your student to give it some more effort.
2. Question what you don't understand. Have your child explain it to you. It will help both of you know if your child understands it.
3. Listen as your child recites spelling words or other memory work.
4. Check your child's assignment book to ensure all work is done.
5. Review work that comes home from school. Comment positively on the things your child got right. Find out if your student now understands the things marked incorrect.

Throughout all steps, be objective, sympathetic, calm and patient. Offer help and praise instead of criticism. Stress that you know your child can overcome any temporary setbacks.
