Get Creative Writing Flowing With an Index Card Game

Effective writing links individual ideas into a unified whole. Here’s a game that can give your child practice putting ideas together:

Get several slips of paper or index cards. Ask your child to write down the name of a different thing or idea on each. Put all the cards into a pile, and have your child pick out four or five. Then see if your student can put the ideas on all those cards into a single sentence.

Suppose the cards read toys, trip, sunny and teachers. Your child might say, “On sunny days, teachers let students take their toys on school trips.” Take turns picking ideas. You’ll have fun—and your child will get practice tying ideas together.
