Prepare for a Great Parent-Teacher Conference
This is the time of year for parent-teacher conferences. This conference is one of the best ways to find out what your child will be learning this year—and what you can do to help.
Preparation is the key to a successful conference. Here are things you can do before, during and after your conference to ensure the best results for your child:
Before the conference:- Make a list of things to tell the teacher. These may include your child's favorite subjects, after-school activities, challenges in school, special medical needs and sensitive issues (weight, shyness, etc.).
- Make a list of things to ask the teacher. You might ask about your child's grades, assignments, attitude, behavior, strengths, weaknesses or test scores.
- Let student know you are having a conference. Ask what your child thinks you and the teacher should discuss. Is your child concerned about anything at school?
During the conference:- Arrive on time. Teachers have conferences with many parents, and even a five-minute delay can throw off everyone's schedules.
- Start the conference on a positive note. You and the teacher have the same goal: to do what's best for your child.
- Discuss the lists you prepared of things you want to tell the teacher and questions you want to ask.
- Ask the teacher for an outline of what will be covered in class this year.
- Listen carefully and take notes as the teacher talks about your child's progress.
- Agree on a plan of action to address any challenges your child faces.
After the conference:- Talk over the results of the conference with your child.
- Stress the positive things the teacher said. Talk about the suggestions the teacher made for improvement—and how you plan to help your child carry these out.
- Stay in touch with the teacher to follow up on how your plans are working.
