Use a Chore Jar to Boost Responsibility
A strong sense of responsibility is important for student success. Here's a way to use chores to instill responsibility—and get your kids to pitch in:
- Start by listing all the jobs your children are capable of doing. Write each job on a slip of paper. If a job has to be done every day, write it six times. Put all the slips in a jar.
- Help your children make a blank chore chart. Write each child's name down the side and the days of the week across the top.
- Have your children take turns drawing job slips from a jar, reading the chore, and choosing which day they want to do it. Each child should do two chores daily. After drawing slips, your children should write the chores on the chart beside their name on the days they want to do them. Allowing your children some choice makes the process more interesting.
- Pick one day of the week where you don't assign chores. Just write, "See what you can do to help" across that column.
