Inspire Your Child's Interest in Nonfiction

Children ask a lot of questions. Reading nonfiction is a great way for them to find the answers. So encourage curiosity, and add some nonfiction to your child's reading list.

To get your elementary schooler interested in nonfiction:

• Read books and articles about how things work. How does the wheat in a field end up in the pasta on your child's plate? How does the dance contest get onto your TV screen? Books can help your child find answers and learn more about topics of interest.
• Turn your reader into a writer. Discuss activities your child does well. Have your child choose one and then write step-by-step instructions to create a "how-to" manual. Your student could explain how to kick a soccer ball past a goalkeeper or describe a creative way to catch a fish. Suggest adding photos or drawings.
• Read nonfiction yourself. Help your child see that learning takes place everywhere and at any time—not just in school.
