Help Your Child Achieve More in School
Some kids—and even some parents—believe that smart students are just born that way. But research proves that students can learn the skills they need to achieve academically.
Here are some ways to help your elementary schooler succeed in school:
- Make learning a priority. Give your child many opportunities to get excited about learning. Keep supplies that promote learning and creativity on hand, such as puzzles and paint, books and binoculars.
- Maintain balance. Help your child balance school and sports, work and play. Balance screen time with exercise and reading.
- Read together every day. When you read aloud, you provide exposure to books that might be too difficult for your child to tackle alone. You'll help build vocabulary and stretch horizons. Have your child read aloud to you, too.
- Encourage organization. Set up a place to keep all school supplies. Teach your child to use an assignment notebook.
- Make discipline firm, fair, and consistent. Children need—and want—limits. Don't hesitate to limit screen time or activities, or to set up a regular study hour.
- Get help if your child struggles. Ask the teacher what resources are available from the school and what you can do at home. For example, you may want see if a high school student could serve as a tutor.
- Get involved as a parent volunteer. This shows your child that education matters to you.
