Four Strategies Help Students Take Responsibility for Learning

As a student, your child's job is learning. Doing it well means being an active learner—one who doesn't simply listen but participates in learning.

Explain to your child that active learners:

  1. Arrive prepared. It's not enough just to show up for school. It's also important to get a good night's sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast and bring needed schoolwork and supplies.
  2. Participate in discussions. Your child should ask questions, offer opinions and exchange ideas with others.
  3. Stay organized. Help your child create a system for organizing assignments and keeping track of notes, corrected quizzes, tests and other materials. It's also helpful to collect a few classmates' phone numbers. In case of absence, your child can call them to find out about missed classwork and assignments.
  4. Keep trying. Offer support as your child tackles assignments and studies for tests. Brainstorm together about different strategies your child can try when stuck. Be sure to show confidence that your child's efforts will pay off!
