Make Your Child Feel Special When Tough Goals Are Met
Your child did it! Learned all the tough weekly math facts. Or was chosen Student of the Day for good behavior after struggling with interrupting.
Setting goals is one of the best ways to motivate children. Sometimes reaching a goal feels so good, it's all the reward your child will need to keep going. But accomplishing challenging goals calls for a special celebration. So when your child reaches a tough goal, revel in the success together.
Here are some fun ideas:
- Take a picture. Photograph your child achieving the goal. Get a picture of your student crossing the finish line or holding a completed science fair project. Frame it and put it by your child's bed. Seeing images of themselves as achievers is a great way for students to start the day! Later you can keep these photos in a special photo album.
- Encourage journaling. Give your child a special "goals journal." In it, your child can list a goal, the steps to take to reach it, thoughts along the way and the date the goal is achieved.
- Plan a special surprise. When your child reaches a goal, write a note offering a small reward. It might be a trip to the ice cream parlor or a chance to invite a friend over.
- Make a victory dinner. Get out your good dishes. Cook your child's favorite foods. Decorate the table. Have a special family dinner to celebrate your student's success.
