Help Ease Start-of-School Jitters
You know your child is happy about going to school this year. But still, your student is waking up at night. Or claiming to have a stomachache. These can be signs that your child is worried.
Here are some common start-of-school worries and how to help your child handle them:
- "What if I don't get to school on time?" "What if I miss the bus?" Some planning the night before can help your child get over this common fear. Have your child lay out the clothes for the next day before going to bed. Pack your child's backpack and set it by the front door. This will eliminate some of those last-minute dashes.
- "Will I like my teacher?" Some kids are shy about raising their hands. Some want to make sure the teacher knows they can already count to 100. Try writing a short letter of introduction to your child's teacher. In it, you can include all the things your child wants the teacher to know. Read the letter aloud before you send it to school.
- "What if I forget which bus to get on?" Children sometimes worry that they will get on the wrong bus after school. You might want to write the bus number on a small card that you attach to your child's backpack. Then offer reassurance: "The teacher knows which bus you ride."
