Encourage Writing in a Variety of Ways
Not every student will grow up to be a best-selling author. But students who can put their thoughts into writing will have more success in school and in a career.
To help your elementary schooler become a better writer:
- Do writing assignments together. When your child has something to write for school, write your own version at the same time. Then, when you both are finished, look over each other's work.
- Encourage email or text correspondence. Writing digitally may appeal to your child more than using a pencil. And it's a great way to stay in touch with friends and family. (Grandparents love to hear from their grandchildren.)
- Read a book together. Then write a letter to your child about what you've read. Encourage your student to write back. Writing about books helps children learn to read for meaning.
- Challenge your child to rewrite the ending of a movie you've just seen together.
- Encourage your child to keep a journal or a diary. Get a book with blank pages. Help your child pick out a special pen. Then encourage your student to put thoughts and feelings on paper.
- Help your child discover practical uses for writing. Suggest writing a letter of complaint or compliment to a company about a product your family uses. Or a letter to the editor of the local newspaper about a topic your child cares about.
