Look for Signs of Reading Difficulty

You can tell when children come to words they can't read. They are likely to squirm in their seats, get sleepy, look anxious or act up.

When you see these signs in your child, here are some ways you can help:

If your child claims to know all the words, do some spot checks. Ask, "What does this word mean?" If your child is unsure, look the word up together.

Don't assume the problem is with big words. Little words like the or and can cause problems, too. So can punctuation marks like periods and commas.
