Listen, Ask Questions, Then Let Your Child Decide

When children need to make a big decision, parents are sometimes tempted to make it for them. But there's something else you should do first: listen. Your child may come to the right conclusion independently and gain important problem-solving skills.

To encourage this:

  1. Reflect. Restate what you hear from your child. "So you're embarrassed about not scoring any goals, and you're worried about trying again."
  2. Ask thought-provoking questions. For example, "If you don't go to the game, how will you feel later? How might your teammates feel?"
  3. Be patient. Pay close attention to what your child says. Take all ideas seriously. If you must offer alternatives, do so with respect for what your child has said.
