Start Talking About Drugs and Alcohol Now

It may seem like elementary school is too early to start talking with your child about alcohol or drugs. But experts say the teenage years are too late. It's best to start having matter-of-fact discussions with your child now.

With very young children—first and second grade—look for brief "learning moments." Best of all are the questions your child asks. But if you see a television news program that shows a car crash caused by a drunk driver, you can say, "We know people should never drink and drive—and never get in a car with anyone who has been drinking."

By the time your child is about nine years old, you can have longer conversations. It’s still best if your child can ask questions, but you can get the conversation started: “I know you’re learning about drugs and alcohol in school. What lessons have you learned?"
