Encourage Responsible Reading

Reading is a wonderful hobby. But it's important to help your child learn that some responsibility comes along with the fun. Here are three common reading-related issues and some easy ways to help your child turn them around:

  1. Damaged or lost books. Choose a special spot—like in a basket or on a shelf—for your child's books where they won't get trampled.
  2. Overdue library books. Make library visits a regular activity. When bringing home books from the library, help your child write the due date on the family calendar.
  3. Staying up too late reading. On occasional weekend nights, let your child stay up later to read. Other nights, tuck your student in early to allow time to read in bed before lights-out.
