Keep Your Child's Mind Active Over the Summer
Don't let the summer be a vacation from learning for your child. To help prevent a "summer brain drain":
- Keep lots of children's books and other reading materials around. Make regular trips to the library. Read with your child every day.
- Find out what your child will be learning next year. (Ask teachers and parents of older children.) Then plan some family summertime activities around some of the topics. For instance, if the class will be covering state history, visit a local historical museum, read a book about the state or watch a movie about a historic event together.
- Regularly ask your child to "do the math" when you go shopping, follow a recipe or do other family activities. For ideas, get a book on fun family math activities from the library.
- Consider summer school or tutoring if your child has had problems in math, reading or another subject this year. Ask your child's teacher about programs that may be available in your area.
- Sign your child up for children's plays, nature center programs and other enrichment activities and classes offered by the school or community.
