Help Your Child Learn to Respect Rules, Authority

Whether they're playing sports or sitting in classrooms, too many children these days think that rules are for somebody else. Here are some ways you can teach your child to respect rules and authority:

Be a good role model. Let your child see that you follow the rules. (If you have 16 items, don't get in the "10 items or less" express line.)
Think about the messages you send. Do you have dreams that your child may one day be the next sports superstar? When kids get the message that winning is the only thing that's important, they'll do whatever it takes to come out on top—even cheat. Instead, talk about how satisfying it is to improve.
Promote good sportsmanship. This means, as basketball star Julius Erving once said, knowing "how to win without bragging and lose without crying."
Look for teachable moments. Talk with your child about how characters behave in the books and shows you enjoy together. Do they make good choices? What else could they do in those situations?
