Encourage Your Child to Read the Newspaper
Reading news articles often is a great way for children to sharpen their reading skills. Newspapers, in print and online, also encourage reading for fun and information. And they broaden students' understanding of local, national and international issues.
But the newspaper habit doesn't come naturally. Parents have to encourage children's interest in the newspaper.
Here are some things to do:
- Help your child discover what kinds of articles seem most interesting. Explore the different parts of the newspaper together—including local news, editorials, comics, sports, advertisements and special kids' pages.
- Read the newspaper as a family.
- Find an interesting news story or comic strip, and cut the paragraphs or panels apart. Have your child read and arrange them in logical order.
- Ask your child to read a short editorial. Challenge your student to underline all facts with a blue pen and all opinions with red.
- Have your child pick a headline and turn it into a question. Then read the article together to see if your child's question is answered.
- Pick an interesting article. Then, while you cook a meal, ask your child to read it to you.
- Ask your child to clip coupons from the paper for favorite products. Then redeem them later together.
- Let your child select a movie or show to watch, based on reviews or the TV schedule in the paper.
