Help With Reading Comprehension and Decoding

When your child struggles with reading, what is the source of the most trouble? Is your student working so hard to decode words that the meaning gets lost? Or is your child so focused on the meaning that individual words get overlooked or misread?

To help with reading comprehension:

• Have your child pause periodically and ask, "Does that make sense?"
• Have your child reread a tricky sentence or paragraph.
• Help your child practice sight words.

To help your child figure out a word:

• Suggest reading the word again.
• Practice making the letter sounds together.
• Ask questions like, "What is the character doing? What word might fit here?"
