Show That 'Needs' Come Before 'Wants'

Children learn more than math skills from managing money. They also learn responsibility, patience and how to set priorities—essential skills for success in school and life.

When it comes to spending money, kids frequently have trouble telling the difference between needs and wants. And advertising makes it even tougher for families to draw this line.

To help your child learn about financial responsibility and make appropriate choices between needs and wants:

• Have your child write needs and wants in a notebook.
• Pull out the notebook when your child wants to buy something. If your student has enough money, it can be spent now on needed items. Leftover funds can be saved for wanted items.
• Help your child use the notebook to track savings toward the cost of wanted items.

This will help your child learn to determine priorities and stay out of debt, important lifelong skills.
