Teach Your Child Fun Facts About How the Body Works

You don't have to be a doctor to teach your child how the human body works. Here are some fun demonstrations to help your child learn about:

• Veins. Add red food coloring to a glass of water. Put in a freshly cut stalk of celery. Watch as the celery soaks up the water. Explain to your child that arteries and veins carry blood to all parts of the body like this.
• Fingerprints. Use clear tape to "lift" your prints. Or press your fingers onto a washable ink pad, then onto paper. Compare your child's prints with yours and with those of others to show that everyone's fingerprints are unique.
• Stomachs. Children's stomachs are about the size of two large fists side-by-side. Blow up a balloon to this size. Have your child visualize how much food would fit inside it at one time.
• Muscle movement. Have your child squeeze a clothespin or binder clip open between a thumb and different fingers, and watch what happens to the muscles in the hand and wrist. Or have your child squat for a count of 20. Can your student feel thigh muscles tightening?
