Follow a Lesson Plan for Teaching Your Child Values
Your child will learn many things in school. But parents and families are the most influential teachers when it comes to building character and teaching values.
Teaching is always easier when you have a lesson plan. Here are some tips for instilling values and developing character at home:
- Think about the values that are important to you. Talk about them openly with your child. Point to examples you see around you. Say things like, "Throwing trash on the street is not responsible."
- Teach by example. Your behavior is the most powerful teacher of all. Ask yourself, "If my child could watch my behavior all day, what lessons would it teach?"
- Set high standards. Expect your child to act responsibly, to be kind to others and to tell the truth. Some families make it a point of family pride. "In our family, we tell the truth."
- Share rules to live by. "Treat others as you want to be treated," for example, helps kids make good decisions. Your child can think, "Would I want someone to talk to me that way?"
