Excite Interest in Writing With Storytelling

Children are natural storytellers. A story about a walk home from the bus stop can turn into an epic that's ready for the movie screen. At the same time, many kids think of writing as work.

Use your child's love of telling stories to encourage an interest in writing. Here are three story starters that make writing fun:

  1. A Character Interview. Help your child imagine a character that would be interesting to write about. To encourage detailed writing, have your child pretend to be a reporter and do an interview. Suggest questions to ask like: What do you look like? Where do you live? What do you like to eat? Then have your child imagine the character's answers.
  2. What If? Encourage your child to turn "What If" questions into stories. Suppose your student asks, "What if our dog Gizmo climbed into the school bus and came to school with me?" Say, "Write what might happen. Would Gizmo go to class with you? Would he sit at his own desk?" The wilder your child's imagination, the better the story will be.
  3. Tall Tales. Your child has told you a tall tale again. Just hand over a roll of long paper. Say, "That's a great story. Write it down and you'll have a real tall tale."
