Expect Your Child to Test the Rules

All children need limits. Limits keep them safe and help them learn to function in school and in society. But most kids would agree that "Rules are made to be tested."

When your child questions the limits you set:

  1. Stop and listen. Your child might say, "Everybody else watches that show. I'll do my math when it's over."
  2. Be brief when stating a decision. "I understand. But you know our family rule: Schoolwork comes first."
  3. Use positive consequences. "I'm so proud that you stuck to your study schedule all week. Let's celebrate with a pizza tonight."
  4. Involve your child in setting rules. "Summer's coming. I'd like you to help me write up some guidelines for family chores."
