Group Study Can Be an Effective Way to Learn
In the upper elementary grades, success on tests requires more preparation. Sometimes, studying in a group can be more effective than studying alone. It can be more fun, too!
To set up a study group before a test, help your child:
- Find three or four friends who want to work together. In a small group, everyone will have a chance to talk, and everyone will have to take part.
- Schedule two or three study sessions. Each one should last about an hour. Establish a rule that everyone comes on time and prepared to work.
- Make a plan for using the time well. Before the group meets, for example, the students could write down questions they have about the topic to be covered.
- Ask group members to list important facts for the test. Then have them quiz one another.
- Leave some time in each study session to discuss possible long-answer questions about subject concepts. Group members can come up with a list of the questions they think might be on the test. Then each person can write answers for one or two of the questions and share them at the next meeting.
