Protect a Struggling Student's Self-Esteem
If learning is challenging for your child, you may worry about the effects of the difficulties on your child's self-esteem. To support and encourage your student:
- Stay positive. Be honest, yet optimistic, about issues or disabilities your child may have.
- Explain that everyone learns differently and struggles at times. Give examples from your own life.
- Create supportive relationships with others, such as teachers, school counselors and family members. Share strategies that work to help your child learn.
- Notice and build on your child's strengths. If your student struggles with reading but is good at math, for example, do plenty of math activities together.
