Reassure Your Child When the News is Scary

We live in times when scary things happen, and children's constant exposure to screens and digital media means that they may hear or see news that frightens them. But when children can talk with parents and trusted adults, even the most terrifying news can seem a little easier to handle.

When talking with your elementary schooler about scary news:

• Find out what your child is thinking. Sometimes children's fears are very different from the truth. As you listen to what your child says, you are also showing that it is OK to talk about anything with you.
• Explain that you and other adults will do all you can to keep your child safe.
• Tell your child to look for the helpers. Mr. Rogers' wise advice helps. Whenever there is something scary in the news, remind your child that there will always be people who are helping, too.
• Hold your child close while you talk.
