Help Your Child Become a Fluent Reader

It's exciting when young readers become fluent—moving quickly through sentences, understanding both the words and the meaning. They are becoming students who can read to learn.

To build your elementary schooler's reading fluency, make time every day to:

• Read to your child. Be a "fluent reading role model." Strive to make your voice sound natural, as though you're speaking rather than reading.
• Listen to audiobooks together. They also let your child hear what fluent reading sounds like.
• Practice together. Have your child read a block of text aloud several times. It should be something short and fairly easy. Give positive feedback. Be patient.
