Use Journals, Jokes & Memories to Build Reading & Writing Skills
Encourage your child to write with activities that make writing (and reading!) fun. Here are some to try:
- Give your child a notebook or journal to write in before bed. Your child can record special moments, insights or even funny thoughts. Explain that these will be fun to read when your child gets older. Discussing memories can open the doors of communication.
- Make a family cookbook. In a blank book, record your family's favorite recipes. Let your child give them names. Ask your student to include short stories about times your family ate a particular meal.
- Have your child make a photo album and write down names, dates and funny captions.
- Ask your child to write a short story or poem about your family, including illustrations.
- Tuck notes or jokes in with your child's lunch. Ask your child to write back.
- Write down and share some of your dreams or wishes for your child.
- Send letters or cards in the mail to your child. Receiving mail is an occasion.
- Have your child design a bookmark with a favorite verse, song or quote.
