Fun Ways to Enrich Mealtime Conversation
Mealtime never has to be boring. With a little imagination, it can be a time for the whole family to have fun together and learn. The skills children learn during meals can help them do better in school. These include listening and speaking, thinking and sharing.
Here are some fun ways to enrich your family's mealtime conversation:
- Take turns selecting a topic to talk about.
- Place an interesting object in the center of the table to start a family discussion.
- Laminate old maps to make placemats. Refer to the maps when talking about cities, states and countries. Point to places in the news.
- Make plans together. Keep a family calendar nearby. Get your child's input on what you'll do on the weekend or for vacation.
- Play "Did You Know?" Write nutrition and other tips/facts on index cards. Take turns drawing and reading the cards. Discuss the information.
- Prepare foods from another culture. Discuss that culture at dinner. Or fix traditional foods from your own heritage.
- Give book reports. Take turns sharing plots, characters and opinions about what you are reading.
