Have Your Child Use Organization Strategies
Children need organization skills to succeed in school. Without them, they lose school materials and important papers. They forget what they're supposed to do. And they don't turn in schoolwork on time.
To promote organization, encourage your student to:
- Create a "day at a glance." Together, make a schedule of school routines. Have your child tape it to the inside cover of a notebook to take to school.
- Maintain an assignment log. In a special notebook or planner, have your child write down each assignment, including the subject, the specific tasks, the due date and days left until the deadline.
- Make to-do lists. After school, have your child write down everything that has to be completed before bedtime (a young child may need your help to write, but can add pictures). After each task is completed, let your child check it off.
- Take care of challenging tasks first. Many students find it helpful to do the most difficult tasks when their energy is high.
- Use different colors for different school subjects. For example, your child could use a blue notebook for English and cover a reading book in blue paper. Color-coding helps students find what they need quickly.
