Observe, Record & Question on Walks With Your Child

Sometimes the best way for a child to learn about the world is to get out in it. Even in cold weather you can make walks with your child fun and enriching. Grab some paper and a pencil, then bundle up and head outside together for a:

Stop, Look and Listen Walk. Walk for 100 steps. Then stop for 30 seconds. Make a record of everything you see and hear. Repeat.
Change Walk. As you walk, make a list of all the things that are changing around you. Is the snow melting? Are there fewer cars parked on the street today than yesterday?
Silent Walk. Make as little noise as you possibly can while you are walking. Listen carefully. What do you hear?
Up, Down and Around Walk. Don't always look straight ahead while you walk. One time, look down at the ground. Another time, look up above your head.
Question Walk. As you walk, think of questions about what you see or hear. Don't worry about the answers—just think of more questions. For example: Why are there still needles on the pine tree when the other trees have lost their leaves? After the walk, help your child find the answers to your questions.
Shape Walk. Look for natural shapes around you. Can your child find a circle? Rectangle? Triangle?
