Encourage Your Child to Promote Kindness

Children aren't always kind to one another. They sometimes pick on other kids. They may say mean things behind people's backs.

But your child doesn't have to accept that unkindness as the norm. Instead, establish a simple rule: Do something about it.

If your child witnesses a classmate being treated unkindly or left out, for example, talk together about ways to respond. Your child could:

Challenge your student to do at least one kind thing for a classmate each week and tell you what it was—and how it made your child feel.

Students who take these actions learn many lessons. They learn how good it feels to do something positive to help another person. Even more importantly, they learn that when they see something wrong, they don't have to accept it. When they do something about it, children learn that they have the power to make a difference.
