Giving Compliments is Worth Your Time

It takes only six seconds to give someone a compliment. A complaint often takes a minute or more.

Research shows that to encourage good behavior—and give your child the confidence to take on challenges—it's important to spend more time on compliments than complaints. Say what you don't like about your child's actions briefly. Then be sure to watch for good behavior and offer plenty of praise. Use a full 60 seconds.

Chances are you'll have to spend less time on discipline. Your child will learn which behaviors you want to see, and your positive attention encourages repetition.
