Chores Provide Responsibility Practice
Doing chores teaches kids about responsibility and the importance of contributing to the common good. Part of being a responsible family member means doing chores without having to be nagged.
To encourage your child to take responsibility:
- Use a chore chart. Especially for younger kids, earning stickers they can put on a chart is a great motivator. Seeing “Feed the dog at 6 PM” on the chart beside her name also makes it hard for your child to say she didn’t know she was supposed to feed the dog.
- Make chores a game. Set aside some time on the weekend as chore time. Have each person draw a slip of paper with a chore written on it from a jar. When the chore is completed, the person can choose a reward slip from another jar. Make the rewards silly and fun: "Get to watch Dad pretend to be a baby." Looking forward to the silliness makes the chores go faster.
