Use Grocery Store Ads for Math Practice

Those grocery store ads that appear in your mailbox or at the store each week are great tools for helping your child practice math facts. With their bright pictures and large numbers, they are easy for even young elementary schoolers to use.

Look through the ads with your child. Help him find pictures of a few foods he likes. Have him cut out the pictures along with their prices.

Now help your child create math word problems using the pictures. “Joey bought one pound of bananas for 60 cents. How much would it cost if he bought two pounds of bananas?”

If your child is older, the problem might ask what half a pound of bananas would cost. Or how much change Joey would get from a dollar. Later, use the word problems your child developed to create flash cards with the picture and the problem on the front and the answer on the back.

Review the ads together as you prepare your shopping list. Choose a few items for your child to "buy." Have him estimate how much it will cost to purchase all these items, then add up the prices to check.
