A Few Family Rules Make Discipline Easier

To function well in a group—at home or at school—children need to respect and follow rules. Creating a short list of family rules is an effective way to establish discipline in your house. Explain to your child that just as there are rules for playing board games, there are rules for family life.

It's important that your child clearly understands your house rules. Create a chart. List four or five of the most important family rules, and discuss them together. You also want to be sure that she understands the consequences of breaking the rules. You might ask her to tell you what happens when kids break the rules at school or in their games. Then, on your rules chart, write down what will happen if your child breaks each of your family’s rules.

Finally, enforce the rules consistently. You may find you have to nag less. Just point to the chart and all you need to say is, "Taylor, you broke rule #3. What are the consequences?"
