What to Look for in Educational Software
Computers, smartphones and tablets are part of children’s lives and learning these days. But some programs and apps seem only to teach kids how to kill alien invaders.
What should you keep in mind as you are choosing software and apps for your child? Look for games and programs that:
- Are educational. Your child should be learning as well as playing.
- Have levels of difficulty. The game should change as your child's skills improve.
- Are fun. Your child will be more likely to use a program if he has fun while he's learning.
- Don't distract from learning. There shouldn't be so many flashing lights and buttons to push that your child focuses on them rather than the content.
- Encourage your child to discover things for himself.
- Help your child be proud of what he learns and achieves.
- Are free from bias, stereotypes or violence.
- Allow your child to interact with you while using them.
