School Friendships Can Boost Enthusiasm for School

After parents, friends may be a child's most important teachers. From their friends, children learn lessons about the importance of loyalty, what it means to give and take, and how to be a leader and a follower.

Sometimes, friends even teach kids things they haven't learned any other way—from how to tie a shoe to how to style their hair.

Friends also help children do better in school, researchers say. Children who know they have school friends are more likely to take positive risks—such as trying out for a school team, volunteering to work a math problem out loud for the class, or serving on a school or class committee.

Children who have friends also find it easier to make other friends. Encourage friendships by inviting your child's friends to join your family for an activity, such as a cookout or a day at the park.
