Take Action to Stop Bullying
Bullying can damage children physically and emotionally. It can also affect their interest and performance in school.
If your elementary schooler is being picked on by someone at school, there are ways you can help. Here’s how:
- Let your child know it's not his fault and that you will help him.
- Offer ideas your child can use to solve the problem on his own. Some bullies thrive on getting their target’s attention, so suggest that your child ignore his tormentor. If he’s being teased or taunted, he could try simply walking away.
- Monitor the situation. Bullying incidents often resolve themselves, but it’s still crucial to keep an eye on what’s happening. Ask your child if he’s still being bothered, and also watch his schoolwork. Even if he’s reluctant to discuss it, the stress of what’s going on may be reflected in his grades.
- Take action if needed. If the bullying persists, or if you sense that the situation is getting worse, you must intervene. Talk to the school principal or counselor and work together to resolve the issue.
