Remember 10 Rules for Effective Discipline

Kids don’t always behave as adults would like. Keep these rules in mind to improve your relationship with your child while encouraging better behavior:

  1. Change misbehavior by setting positive goals. Tell your child what to do, instead of what not to do.
  2. Say what you mean … and mean what you say. Be sure that your child understands the rules.
  3. Involve your child in solving problems.
  4. Talk less; do more.
  5. Ask what happened to cause misbehavior. Don't tell your child what you think happened.
  6. Praise your child when you see the behavior you want.
  7. Impose logical consequences for misbehavior. For example, if your child can’t get ready on time in the morning, make bedtime earlier, so getting up time can be earlier.
  8. Offer your child choices—but be sure you can live with all the options.
  9. Focus more on what your child does right than on mistakes.
  10. Show your love.
