Have a Code Word for Safety

Emergencies happen. Your car has a flat tire. You have to take another child to the hospital. But your child is expecting you to pick him up from an activity, and you've told him never to get in the car with anyone else.

A code word can help your child know it is OK for him to go along. Come up with a special family code word. If you have to send someone else to get your child, give them the code word. Saying it will let your child know it's safe to get in the car.

Later, your child might use the code word. A teen who wants to say "Come and get me" without anyone knowing can use the secret code when calling you.
