Correct Your Child’s Mistakes Privately

Elementary students are learning a lot more than academics. They are also learning the social skills—such as how to treat people with respect—that make a classroom comfortable and productive.

Children who feel respected themselves are more likely to behave respectfully. Help your child learn what respect feels like. When he makes mistakes, don’t point them out in front of others or put your child down. That will only make him feel ashamed and resentful. It won’t teach him how to be considerate.

Instead, ask yourself what your child needs to learn in order to avoid that mistake in the future. Then find an appropriate time to teach him those skills one-on-one.
