Use a ‘Checkbook’ to Teach Money Management

Giving your child an allowance can help him learn financial responsibility. But you may not always have the right cash on hand.

To solve this problem, give your child a homemade checkbook. Make up some sample checks that look like the real thing. On the first day of each month, "deposit" his monthly allowance in the checkbook.

When your child is ready to make a purchase, have him write you a "check." Show him how to record his checks on a register and keep track of the money remaining. Then you can pay for the item.

Your child will be proud that he knows this adult system of money management, and he will also be practicing math and writing skills.
