Learn About American Symbols With October Anniversaries
This month, help your child learn about some beloved American symbols. Here are some special dates and events to recognize with your child.
- October 19: On this day in 1814, the song “The Star-Spangled Banner," now the national anthem of the United States, was first performed publicly. Read the words written by Francis Scott Key with your child. Talk about the story that is told in this patriotic song.
- October 28: This is the Statue of Liberty's birthday. The statue was dedicated in 1886, and became a symbol of freedom for immigrants arriving in New York. Help your child learn more about your family's origins and the journeys that brought family members to where they are now.
