Start Talking Now About the Tough Issues

Some experts say that the best time to begin talking to kids about difficult subjects is when they are between the ages of nine and 11. They're old enough to grasp the complexity of an issue. But they're still young enough to listen.

When discussing serious topics with your child, be sure to:

Be factual. Avoid speaking only in generalities. Find out the facts, and share them without exaggerating.
Explain your position. What is your opinion? Which facts are most important? Why? What do you want your child to know or do?
Talk with your child, not to your child. Find out what your child already knows. Listen without interrupting.
Set a good example. Make sure your actions support your words.
