Use Words That Motivate, Not Discourage

Your child has been working to master a new skill in class, but her schoolwork shows that she still doesn’t understand it. The language you use to talk with her about it can motivate her … or cause her to give up.

Saying things like "You haven’t quite mastered this yet," sends a signal to your child that she can get the answer if she just keeps working. Studies show that children will keep working if they believe they can figure out the answer … even if they’re "not there yet." On the other hand if your child hears you say, "You still don't understand," she may think she never will.
